I’m obsessed with the smell of libraries. Books and bindings, scotch tape and glue: the smell of words, possibilities. I grew up with that scent, the dust of yellowed hardcovers clinging to my hands. I have a very distinct memory of climbing out of the car at six or seven clutching the books I’d taken out, my next door neighbor chuckling from her front yard at the enormous stack of paperbacks that obscured my face. I couldn’t help it: I needed to borrow that many. Otherwise I went through them too fast.

Luckily, at the library it didn’t matter.

I’m a fast, hungry reader, and it’s rare for me to repeat a book. It would be a waste of money—and paper—for me to buy books new, or even used. When it comes to living simply and saving money, I can’t beat the library as a resource. Books, movies, magazines: why wouldn’t you want to get your hands on all of this stuff for free?

I’ve always had a library card in the city where I live, but last year I started commuting about an hour each way to work. I got lazy about the library—often it was closed by the time I got there, or I’d put off returning books because I didn’t feel like going out of my way on the long trip to my office. I got hit with fines, which was irritating, and soon I wasn’t using the library very much at all.

So a couple of weeks ago, I stopped by the library in the town where I worked to see if I could use my office address to get a card there—turns out it was no problem. A block from the subway station, it’s super convenient, and the collection is fantastic. I’m a library lady again.

And that works for me.

I too love everything that the library is! You will see me weekly caring sacks full of library books to my 3rd floor apartment eagerly waiting to crack open each interesting cover!

Library’s are the coolest, hooray for library ladies!

I am a library lady too. I even get the books on cd so that I can listen on my 3 hour round trip commute.

Thats great I enjoy the library too. But I buy copy’s of some of my favorite book to read again now. As it has been years so I forgot what they said. I only buy used book though. I also used google library to read some of the book. They do not have all of it on line for free. But it gives you enough of the book info to let you know what you want. So you can try to get it at the library.

We’ve gotten out of the library habit too. Reading your post reminded me of how much I miss it. We’ll be going back!

Woohoo! Another library lady! WE love our library. I’ve even been able to look books up online for ours and put them on hold even new books. :D

  7. I really miss the library! I feel like I don’t have enough time to read, but I bet I could make time (read: blog less!) because books were my first love. Thanks for the great reminder!

    Blessings, Whitney

I am a ravenous reader and a frequent library patron. I also enjoy http://www.paperbackswap.com for those times when I just can’t make it to the library or the book I want is unavailable.

I was just like you as a kid, checking out stacks of books at a time. The library is a tremendous resource that everyone should be using! I work at a church that has a library so I am doubly blessed! I consider it as one of the perks of my job.

Hooray for libraries! I also rekindled my relationship with the library this year and I’ve just been wallowing in the ecstasy that having more books than you can carry brings. Love it!

  12. Melissa Says:

Hahaha… sounds like me at 6 or 7 too. My mom had a rule: I could check out as many books as I could carry. She never specified that I had to be able to SEE over them… so she spend many a trip guiding me so that I wouldn’t fall over the curb.

I miss the library too (love the smell!) but I have so many books that others have given me over the years that I need to catch up on those first!

  13. Rebeckah Says:

I just love libraries too! I am SO glad you found a new and more convenient one! God bless!

  14. Michie Says:

Happy to “meet” someone who else who has had a lifelong love of libraries!

  15. Janis Says:

I love libraries as well. With the invention of computer systems, I am able to have books transferred from any library in Georgia, too. I just love the library! I can remember carrying stacks of books out from beginner books to now. Happy to meet someone else that loves libraries as well.

  16. I love going to the library and also requesting books from the interlibrary loan system, which is free for residents of my town. I borrow a lot of books through interlibrary loans! :)
