Last May, following a weird conflagration of life events, three of my closest girlfriends left town in the space of a month (seriously, guys…was it something I said?). We’re spread out all over the country now. It’s rare we find ourselves all in the same place at the same time (even if that “place” is iChat), and we’ve had to get creative about keeping in touch.

One thing that’s been working well for us is a sort of Sisterhood of the Traveling Scrapbook—a spiral notebook that gets sent from chick to chick and filled with all kinds of ephemera, the bits and bobs that make up our lives now.

As the book has meandered from place to place it’s gotten thick with movie stubs, a recipe for flourless chocolate cake, a most excellent summer playlist, book recommendations, stories, polls, letters, jokes, receipts, photos, and a hundred other odds and ends, all of which are really just a way of calling out to one another across the miles:

Hi, guys.

I miss you.

But for now, this works for me.

I loooove this idea!! My best friend moved across the country last year and we have desperately struggled to stay in touch, but I think this is just the idea to keep us connected.

What a wonderful idea! I have a best friend moving in December. :( This would definitely help to keep in touch.

What a super idea! Oh my gosh. I’m impressed. I’ll have to keep that in mind, ’cause my sister is threatening to move far, far away (okay, only by three hours… but still! Far, far). Awesome.

I love this idea. I had a friend move to Florida a few years ago, and I had the idea of sending her a scrapbook that we could send back and forth, and never got to it. I should try it!
